Sleepy Hallow drops his first album with no features. Does he hit or miss?
Sleepy Hallow drops his third album overall and first album with no features. Every track on the album is produced by Great John, a longtime Winner's Circle producer.
On May 26 unluckily most of the album was leaked on to Soundcloud. I feel kinda ambivalent about leaking rapper's music. Another blog post will be out concerning the topic in the near future.
First of all I wanna start of praising the cover art. That's a masterpiece for sure.
I think it's really exciting to see Sleepy go a bit further than the drill genre, and I think him and Great John definitely have potential as a duo.
But it's sad to see the alikeness on this album. What could have been a huge new step for Sleepy instead turns to too many bland songs, which to be honest sounds the same.
Rating:
Vibe - 6/10. It scores average on the vibe scale. As you can see on the trackless, I feel like many of the songs have huge vibe potential, but none of them really fulfills it.
Lyrics - 3/10. I gotta say if you take Low Key, Make You, Murda She Wrote and Equal out of the picture, the lyrics are generally really bad. It circles around the same things even the bars.
Flow - 5/10. I'm glad to see Sleepy switch his flow up from drill to more low-fi. This Sleepy definitely has potential and I think this was a trailer for his next album, which hopefully will be way doper.
Music - 6/10. Great John delivers great beats on most of the tracks. But on many of the tracks there ain't much to it, a slow beat with a slow Sleepy rapping.
Overall - 5,4/10. This did not go well with my taste, besides from the few songs I've called a vibe or praised the lyrics on there really ain't much to it. Hopefully this is a warm-up for his next album, where hopefully they learn from their mistakes and make a banger.
Tracklist:
Basketball Dreams (Intro) - 5,5/10. Unfortunately this was one of the many songs, which got leaked prior to release. A low-fi vibe from Sleepy, but the song does as intended and serves as an intro.
2 Sauce - 2/10. This was a track released way before the actual album was released. But I gotta say the song is without meaning and I don't think it hits the vibe at all.
4or Daze - 3/10. Sleepy goes back to drill, but the low-fi vibes with drill rapping doesn't really work out.
2055 - 6/10. A track, where Sleepy reminisces about his life and the parties they have. I like the low-fi vibes and how Sleepy presents his life in the parties in the sky.
Make You (Snake Proof) - 6,5/10. An underrated track. Sleepy opens up about how he feels sometimes. I always appreciates seeing vulnerability in rappers lyrics, and Sleepy delivers two great verses along with a good hook.
Equal - 6/10. "Turned the pain into fame". Sleepy talks about his career in general and how it's cold at the top. A topic multiple rappers have taken on before.
Scrub - 6/10. I like the up beat, happy vibe this tracks brings. After reminiscing about his past, Sleepy delivers a song with the only intention of showing him on top, and I gotta say I like the vibe of it.
Sleepy Freestyle - 2/10. An assumable try to recreate "Deep End Freestyle". This track is just to slow. He almost doesn't rap and there are way to many repetitions for it to be a freestyle.
Chicken - 0,5/10. Just no. This sample does not work at all.
Mi No Sabe - 1/10. A little better than "Chicken", but the background noises ruins the rapping.
1999 - 5/10. I like this low-fi vibe. A gangster's slow song.
Murda She Wrote - 6/10. Another really slow rap song. The lyrics really drags this song up from the grave.
Low Key (Bonus) - 5,5/10. "Locked up in pain and you're my codeine". A true love song - a rare sight from Sleepy.
Tip Toe (Bonus) - 4/10. The 30th ever collaboration between Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow. Since this is a bonus track and not originally intended for the album, it doesn't really count as an album feature. I really don't like the background noises. I think they ruin most of the song.
