Time to get political. A super underrated masterpiece from the New York rapper.
ALL AMERIKKAN BADA$$ is Joey's second studio album and it was released on April 7, 2017.
Before diving into the project let's hear what Joey has to say about it:
"This new project is very powerful. That's the best thing I can say about it: it's very strong music. It's like hella vegetables. It's hella good for you, and it's almost my hesitance with it: the fact that it's so good for you, because these kids these days want candy. "Devastated" is almost like the organic candy because the message is still good for you"
And I completely agree with him. It is very strong music and a very strong subject to talk about. The war Joey is talking about will continue and stay relevant. Using hip hop as a speaker for the black community goes back to the 80's, but Joey does it to a 10/10 still.
Joey isn't scared of letting people know how he feels about Trump. He reflects upon everything the president represents in his mind from police shootings to wider institutional racism.
Rating:
Vibe - 8/10. Fucking amazing how a political album with such important issues remains a consistent vibe almost in every song.
Lyrics - 8,5/10. Joey is a genius of rapping, constantly twisting the words and expressing himself in new ways.
Flow - 9/10. As said before Joey displays his tremendous rapping skills throughout the album.
Music - 8/10. The music varies from Reggae to up beat to hard rap. It fits the purpose of the album great.
Relevant - 10/10. Once again I've added the relevant category. Thinking about political rap albums this is the best to be made since 2010 if not for a longer time.
Overall - 9/10. Joey really does it. A super relevant album with various different kinds of tracks and meanings but still a remaining purpose for the whole album, which gets shown multiple ways on multiple songs.
Tracklist:
GOOD MORNING AMERIKKKA - 7/10. A really good starter for the album. It reflects around racism, freedom, politics and happiness, which all continues to be a major part throughout the album.
FOR MY PEOPLE - 7/10. Joey cements his voice in the fight against racism in such a clean way.
TEMPTATION - 9/10. A true genius track. Joey keeps wondering why someone's skin color should matter and why judging because of ethnicity is even a thing. But the up beat, happy track is such a good vibe. A hella good song with lyrics worth listening to.
LAND OF THE FREE - 8/10. A political track on mass incarceration. The song was originally teased for Martin Luther King day. His points are very relevant and it's clear he has something he wants to fight for.
DEVASTATED - 9/10. With this track the album took turning from being pure political to talking about Joey's more personal problems. Joey shared this story about his childhood following the release:
"It was a really devastating moment in my life. You know, watching my mom battle a serious struggle, for me as a young child wasn't anything I ever liked to see and I'm sure no child likes to see that. I used to come home from school and see eviction notices on our door"
It's amazing how Joey turned his live around. Like he says now he's on his way to greatness.
Y U DON'T LOVE ME? (MISS AMERIKKKA) - 8,5/10. An absolute masterpiece of a song. Joey symbolizes America as a lady, who doesn't treat him right. Putting this perspective on the issues is so well thought.
ROCKABYE BABY - 6,5/10. On this track Schoolboy Q and Joey reflects and reminisce on their past.
RING THE ALARM - 6/10. Taking a break from the black lives matter theme, Joey takes shots at the whole game and raps how "n*ggas is fake". I think the song is kinda misplaced and doesn't really fit with the rest of the album.
SUPER PREDATOR - 7/10. A term which has become rather controversial since Hillary Clinton said it about youth gangs back in 2016. Many people believe she used the term to describe African Americans rather than gangs.
BABYLON - 6,5/10. Joey switches it completely up bringing Reggae into the picture. In the rastaworld it's common to refer to the oppressors as Babylon. Even though the song is a Reggae vibe the original theme is continued on. "Do black lives really matter?" Joey asks. A question which has only gotten more relevant since the release.
LEGENDARY - 9/10. A fantastic track where Cole and Joey reflects on how they affect their surroundings. The track circles around the inner peace they find along side the on going war. It's amazing that these two collab. Joey actually said in an interview that Cole was his favorite rapper for a long time.
AMERIKKKAN IDOL - 7/10. "Sorry white Amerikkka, but I'm about to black out". A great ending to a worldclass album. Joey ends it in style, questioning the government and the general stereotypes we put on people. The slow jam with hard rap works out perfectly.
